A History Profile of Shanghai Changle School

by Zhang Shilong

The predecessor of Shanghai Changle School was the Kiangse (i.e. Jiangxi) Advanced Vocational School or the Kiangse School, a junior middle school co-sponsored by the Kiangse Natives’ Guild and the Kiangse Industrial and Commercial Association in 1932, when it was under discussion to set up the Kiangse Schooland the following year the school’s board of directors was formed by election in Weihaiwei Rd. with the 18-mu Yu-Chang Villa at 174 Sideroad of Nanshii.e. NantaoChezhan Rd. donated as the building of the proposed school.

The school officially opened in September 1933 with “Being intelligent, honest, diligent and frugal ”as its motto, Li Liejun as the first chairman of the board of directors, and Xu Suzhong as its executive director and schoolmaster. The school consisted of Commerce SectionCivil Engineering Section and General Section, offering the secondary education. In 1937 when War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression broke out, the school was bombed in ruins. Soon after that, the school, re-named the Kiangse Elementary and Secondary School, resumed its opening with some houses by lease on Shantung Road and then near the Bubbling Well Temple (now Shandong Road and Jing’an Temple respectively). In 1940, the school board rebuilt its classroom building on a leased plot at 655 Rue Bourgeat (now Changle Road) with the fund it had raised. The second floor of the building was devoted to its secondary education section ( including high school education) while the first floor was devoted to sections of the elementary education and preschool education. Later, the school expanded its enrollment and converted some leased residential houses into classrooms. First Zhang Dingpan, then Xu Yuanhao was chairman of the board of directors, and Wu Shulin was schoolmaster during the period. During 1950-56, when Peng Wenying was schoolmaster, the section of elementary and secondary went into two independent sections. In 1953, Yao Jinghua was appointed as the deputy schoolmaster of the Kiangsi School Pte. by the Education Bureau of the Shanghai Municipal Government.

In 1956, when the Kiangsi Secondary School Pte. was renamed Shanghai No. 59 Middle School, the school was changed into a public one with Yao Jinghua at the helm, while the Kiangse Elementary School Pte. was renamed as Shanghai Changle Road Elementary School with Yang Guangxi appointed as schoolmaster by Xuhui Government. In the educational reform that took place in 1958, it was authorized by the Education Bureau of the Shanghai Municipal Government as an experimental school of 9-year elementary and secondary educational system, shortened from the original 12-year system. Meanwhile, the school was moved to 18 Donghu Road in exchange of school buildings with the Shanghai Hygiene Carders School, formerly assets of the St. Joan of Arc College run by the French Catholics. In 1960 the experiment ended, and in 1962, the section of the secondary education, i.e. Shanghai No. 59 Middle School was moved to 40 Damuqiao Road and today it is part of Shanghai Nanyang Junior Middle School while its section of elementary education, however, remained where it was, and in 1977, it started to receive overseas students. In 1981 when Changyan Elementary School was disbanded, some of its teachers and students joined the school. In 1984, the school established a friendly tie of communication with the Honda Elementary School in Osaka, Japan. In 1993, when its old building was demolished, the school started to construct its new 6-story building at 455 Changle Road and the new building was completed in 1995. Then the school  was officially bestowed its current name, Shanghai Changle School, by Xuhui District Government and Song Richang, deputy Shanghai mayor at the time, dedicated his calligraphy of the school name. When Shanghai Donghu Elementary School was cancelled in 1999, all the students and teachers joined the school, and another wholesale merger took place when Shanghai No. 2 Anfu Road Elementary School ceased in 2002.

Since the school was turned into a public school from a private one, the consecutive schoolmasters have been Yang Guangxi, Chen Yuyan, Wang Zengxi, Wang Mingming, Hu Fuquan, Xu Pengming, Long Shiming, Feng Zhenzhong, Ni Peiren, and Shen Lilin. And Ming Dezhang is now in office.

With years’ mutual efforts made by generations of the Changle teachers and students as well as the schoolmasters, by carrying out the policy of quality education perseveringly, by following the school motto of Being true with science, being kind with humanities, being beautiful with arts, by keeping the goal of creating a Changle  school of art, sports and innovation in mind, the school has developed into a one of 9-year educational system with a qualified faculty, characterized by its guiding principle, its perfect pedagogy, its frequent programs of exchange and cooperation, and its picturesque campus.

In the process of pushing forward quality education, the school offered a volleyball course, a brand-new program at that time, based upon the principle of the student’s  physical and mental development. Later, more school-based extended and selective courses were introduced such as folk music, calligraphy, painting, architectural model, computer, Chinese ancient poetry, tennis, swimming, etc. to cultivate students specialties and to accelerate their personal growth. The school has been honored with many prizes and Modal Unit by Xuhui District Government.
